Genentech scientists first linked the Hedgehog Pathway to cancer.

Geneticists discovered that a certain mutation caused the developing fruit fly to become curled up and spiky like a hedgehog. Many years later, scientists at Genentech first linked this pathway to cancer. Today, study of the hedgehog pathway is an important area of research across many different cancer types.
