The Position

The Department is currently seeking an additional Pathologist to work with five of its Pathologists to help them support (i) research scientists who discover and develop drugs for the treatment of cancer, and (ii) research scientists and clinicians who discover and develop biomarkers for pharmacodynamics and patient selection purposes in Phase I, II and III clinical trials of oncology therapeutics.

The successful candidate will be familiar with, if not expert in, the molecular, cellular, systems biology, and pathogenic mechanisms of cancer. He/she will have a strong interest in providing pathology support for drug and biomarker discovery programs in cancer, and an appreciation for the need for potential flexibility in contributing support to programs outside of oncology as the need arises.  Depending on the candidate and the availability of resources, there may be an opportunity for the individual to spend part of his or her efforts in basic and/or translational research activities that have relevance to the company’s business goals.

Who You Are

The position requires an MD or DVM, or their foreign equivalents, with appropriate Board Certification in Pathology, and clear demonstration of high quality scholarly productivity in a relevant field of biomedical research. A Ph.D. degree in a related field, in addition to the MD or DVM degree will be highly desirable. We seek candidates who can interpret traditional diagnostic categories in the context of a detailed and current understanding of molecular and cellular biology. Candidates must have demonstrated their ability to handle several projects at any given time, to work successfully in teams and to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences. 

The Department of Pathology is embedded within the Research Organization, and works within the Research and Development Organizations to ensure that strategies for the treatment and cure of disease are based on accurate analyses of pathogenetic mechanisms. The Department's 10 Pathologists collaborate with and provide pathology support to research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and preclinical development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. These include diseases caused by malignant transformation, or dysfunction of the nervous system, or dysfunction of the immune system. Pathologist support effort includes participation on teams devoted to the development of predictive and prognostic markers in many of these diseases. At Genentech, pathologists have access to cutting edge equipment and techniques, and Pathology Core Laboratory facilities and personnel. The Core Laboratories include histology, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, laser capture microdissection, clinical pathology, advanced light microscopy, including confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, and tissue banking, including tissue microarrays. The department has strong ties with academic and clinical groups both in the US an d abroad, and supports pathology resident rotation activities. Publication in peer-reviewed journals is expected as a component of Pathologist career path development at Genentech.
