The Position

This position is responsible for providing leadership and direction to a purification process development group in Purification Development.  The candidate will lead a team of 12-18 staff comprised of several groups of scientists and engineers and be responsible for the management and leadership of multiple early stage and late stage development and technology projects.  A high degree of initiative is expected to assess new areas and directions critical for Pharma Technical Development and Genentech’s future success.  Strong management skills to lead, motivate, and develop staff in their group is a key requirement for this position.  The candidate is expected to provide leadership to their groups and throughout Purification Development and across Pharma Technical Development.

Who You Are

  • Background in biochemistry, biology, or chemical engineering. Experience required: B.S. with 12 years, M.S. with 10 years, or PhD with 7 years experience and proven high level of technical competence. In all cases the candidate should have at least 5 years in a supervisory role. 
  • Experience with all downstream processing unit operations from harvest through purification and formulation of drug substance is required, including experience with disc-stack centrifuges, membrane and depth filtration, and chromatographic separations. Must have experience writing IND/IMPD and/or BLA/MAA and have experience interacting with health authorities. Working knowledge of PC/PV and QbD principles is also required. 
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in managing groups of people.  Motivates and supports the career development and technical expertise of staff.  Regularly meets with, sets clear goals and expectations, and provides timely feedback to staff.  Hires, develops and retains the best people.
  • Work is performed without appreciable direction. Exercises considerable latitude in determining objectives and approaches to assignments. Ensures solutions are consistent with organization’s objectives
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills and ability to build and maintain relationships with partners, customers and collaborators. Fosters teamwork and actively participates in the review of projects with colleagues throughout the company.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead innovation and change and drive for results. Develops solutions to complex problems requiring the regular use of ingenuity and innovation. Participates in defining Purification Development’s objectives; timelines, budgets, human resources. 
  • Leads and/or participates as a departmental representative in inter-department teams and senior management meetings. 
  • Effective communicator of ideas, project goals and results. Expected to produce significant documents or publications (internal or external) which support Genentech policies and goals. Presents to senior management and at national/international forums.  Exerts influence inside and outside Genentech through publications and participation in meetings.
