The Genentech Foundation for Biomedical Sciences awards grants annually in support of the biomedical sciences based on the following criteria:
- Foundation funds are to be used only for direct support of education and research in the biomedical sciences, specifically including programs and organizations fostering the participation in biomedical science of under-represented minorities and underprivileged groups.
- An educational or research organization must use Foundation funds solely to support activities in the Bay Area. Eligible institutions include: primary, junior high and high schools, schools, school districts, colleges, universities, and charitable research or educational organizations.
- The organization must be a public charity. Private foundations are not eligible for awards.
- Educational institutions above the high school level should be of the highest academic caliber and contribute in a substantial manner and on a regular basis to biomedical research.
- Foundation Funds are to be used only for direct support of education and research in the biomedical sciences. The Foundation does not fund indirect costs. Preference will be given to programs that receive significant funding from other sources. The Foundation will normally not be the sole provider of funds to a program.
- The Foundation does not make awards directly to students. However, an institution may apply for Foundation funds for the purpose of making grants to individual students if it requires demonstration of exemplary research, academic ability or potential, study in an outstanding environment for biology education and active engagement in research in the biomedical sciences.
