FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For"

On January 21, 2010, FORTUNE magazine named Genentech to its "100 Best Companies to Work For" list for the 12th consecutive year. In selecting the "100 Best Companies to Work For," FORTUNE relies on two sources: the opinions of the company's own employees and a "culture audit" of the programs and practices at each company. The former is deemed most important, with two-thirds of the total score coming from employee responses to a survey created by the Great Place to Work Institute. The remaining one-third of the score comes from FORTUNE's evaluation of each company's answers to questions about pay, benefits, hiring, communication, culture and diversity. The most important considerations for this year's list were whether or not the companies are hiring and the ways in which companies are helping their employees weather the recession. Genentech is the only biotech/pharmaceutical company since 2000 to be ranked among the top 20.
