FAQ: Internships

What is the difference between an intern and a co-op assignment?

Intern: An internship is a paid assignment providing students the chance to receive rigorous and meaningful work experience. At a minimum, a summer intern is a student who has completed his or her sophomore year of college. Genentech provides assignments mostly for undergraduate and graduate levels, with some doctoral assignments. You are not required to be a currently enrolled student, but you must be an undergraduate, graduate or Ph.D. candidate. As an intern, you will work in a professional setting under the supervision of at least one practicing professional. Assignments are typically full-time for 10-12 weeks, and they normally do not count for academic credit.

Co-op: A student who is interested in a cooperative education (co-op) experience must generally complete his or her assignment over the period of one or more semesters/quarters. To qualify for this assignment, you must receive academic credit for the work being performed. Co-op opportunities will include work assignments related to your academic degree being earned, as well as your career interests. Genentech's co-op assignments are generally six months in duration. Co-ops may work full-time during the summer and continue part-time during the school year.

When does Genentech accept resumes for intern and co-op positions?

Resumes for intern and co-op positions are accepted between January and late April, depending on the position.

How do I apply for a position?

Intern and co-op assignments are posted at select universities as well as the Job Search area of this site. Students attending the schools listed on our campus recruiting calendar should contact their campus career centers about how to apply. Most positions are posted on our website for 30 days or until a sufficient number of resumes are received. Students may search for intern and co-op positions by selecting College Jobs from the dropdown list when using the Category search field within our site's Job Search section. You may also use our Genentech on Campus tool to search for information specific to your university.

What are the criteria for a Genentech intern or co-op assignment?

All individuals applying for an internship or a co-op assignment at Genentech must meet the following criteria:
