Putting Creative Ideas Into Action
As part of the merger with Roche, Genentech joined a global Product Development organization - with sites in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific. After proof-of-concept has been established for a project, it moves from Genentech Research and Early Development to the global Product Development organization, where it goes through rigorous clinical testing in order to determine and demonstrate the molecule's potential benefit as a therapeutic.
More specifically, Product Development determines which potential new drugs have the best prospects for development by testing the formulas against specific diseases in the clinic and then guiding chosen drug candidates through the many rigorous phases of clinical testing. Among the criteria used to assess drug candidates are the following:
- Scientific confidence
- Medical need and market opportunity
- Protection of intellectual property
- Manufacturing requirements that will result in affordability
The combined Roche and Genentech pipeline includes both breakthrough innovations and new indications for existing products that may fight more than one disease. As a member of Product Development, you would be involved in the ongoing evaluation of this pipeline in order to identify the most promising projects with the greatest potential impact on patients.
