Genentech Routing Instructions

  1. Bills of Lading
    1. List every purchase order or cost center on the bill of lading covering each shipment.
    2. Multiple purchase orders shipped at the same time must be tendered to the carrier as one shipment. If your supplier system forces the printing of separate bills of lading, it would be advisable to link all bills of lading under one master bill.
    3. Describe the product under the appropriate National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) description, indicating the item, class and weight.
    4. Density "bump" if the NMFC item permits it, and if this will result in a lower transportation charge.
  2. Freight Terms
    1. "Prepay and Add" or "Prepaid" freight terms are discouraged. Shipments should be sent collect and billed to Software Solutions, our third party freight payment company. (See Software Solutions Address)
  3. Routing Guide
  4. Our Routing Matrix should be used for all collect or 3rd-party shipments when Genentech is responsible for the freight charges. This would include shipments to South San Francisco and Vacaville, CA, as well as shipments between suppliers made on Genentech's behalf.
    1. Our routing guide calls for the use of specific Genentech preferred carriers. Tendering collect or 3rd-party shipments to carriers, other than those specified in the routing matrix or by our Transportation Department, will result in a penalty (the difference in the charges via the preferred carrier versus the carrier used, plus a $25 administration fee) being billed to the supplier.
    2. When contacting Genentech Transportation with a routing question, please be prepared to supply the following information:
      1. Origin and destination city, state, and zip code
      2. Purchase order number
      3. Number of cartons
      4. Total weight (by NMFC class when applicable)
      5. NMFC item number if applicable
      6. Cubic inches/feet of the shipment
