Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
I joined Genentech in 1999 after two years at another biotech company, Genetics Institute (now merged with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals). I chose to join biotech in order to do research that can more directly benefit patients. Genentech has certainly been an exciting place to do research. There are so many opportunities for pursuing new ideas.
My Focus
I have a joint appointment with the Immunology Department and have become involved with many of their research efforts, from early discovery of novel genes, microarray analysis to identifying gene signatures in immune cell subsets and disease biopsies. Most recently, we have been using human genetics to identify key risk genes for asthma and Crohn's disease. I have gotten the most satisfaction from contributing to several late-stage research projects that have moved into Development and will soon be in clinical trials.
