Translational Oncology
I joined Genentech in 2006 after seven years in the Boston biotech sector, four of which were spent in a productive collaboration with scientists here at Genentech. The decision to become an East Coast transplant was driven by my passion to take small molecule drugs from concept to patients, and to do so in an environment driven by science and the desire to have a dramatic impact on patient outcome.
As a transition point between the bench and the clinic, the translational oncology group is focused on providing data that determines the relative efficacy of new agents and correlates efficacy with target inhibition and drug exposures to help inform clinical strategy.
My Focus
Currently, my laboratory supports several projects within the oncology pipeline including those aimed at targeting hedgehog and IAP pathways, as well as a number of projects targeting key signaling nodes downstream of cell surface tyrosine kinases. In addition, we continue to focus on identifying ways to improve the translational aspects of our work by gaining a more detailed understanding of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic relationships for each of these targets. Such knowledge will enable more refined dose predictions in our clinical trials and ultimately lead to better decision-making and provide the right drug, at the right exposure, to our patients.
We have also turned our attention to the identification of potential mechanisms of resistance to our drugs so that we can proactively develop treatment strategies that will reduce the potential for resistance as well as to treat resistant tumors should they arise.
