Focus on Infectious Disease

Recently, we've seen an explosion of new information about the basic biology of pathogens and how a host responds to infection. We're using this new information to develop new medicines and technologies that combat serious bacterial and viral infections, such as HCV.

In the department of microbial pathogenesis we're focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease and developing of novel technologies to interrupt pathogenic events. We're also exploring new ways to deliver therapeutics to the site of infection, that are both more efficient at pathogen elimination and less toxic to the host.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Publication: PLoS Pathog, 2009
    Atg5-independent sequestration of ubiquitinated mycobacteria
  • Here we show that cytosolic access results in a new and intricate host pathogen interaction: host macrophages ubiquitinate Mm, while Mm shed their ubiquitinated cell walls.
