Cancer Survival Toolbox

Cancer Survival Toolbox

The Cancer Survival Toolbox® is a free, self-learning, downloadable audio program that has been developed by leading cancer organizations. Winner of the Gold Star Award, the National Cancer Institute's highest patient education honor, the Toolbox includes the basic skills survivors needs to advocate for themselves in the cancer environment: Communicating, finding information, making decisions, solving problems, negotiating and standing up for your rights. The Cancer Survival Toolbox is now available to download through its own interactive website, www.cancersurvivaltoolbox.org.

Produced through a unique collaboration of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the Oncology Nursing Society, the Association of Oncology Social Work, with a grant from Genentech, Inc., the Cancer Survival Toolbox encourages people with cancer and their caregivers to take a more active role in their treatment and care. The audio program can be listened to on the internet as well as downloaded for future use. The Toolbox is available in English, Spanish and written Chinese on the internet.

In addition to the Basic Skills program, separate programs have been developed for people with special needs. These include Topics for Older Persons, Finding Ways to Pay for Care and Caring for the Caregiver.

Each section of the Cancer Survival Toolbox website helps empower people to develop key skills in order to better meet and understand the challenges of the illness. Its interactive resource feature allows people to gain access to credible information about their specific type of cancer by referring them to credible sources of information and allowing them to search in a more defined pool of materials, rather than having to sift through unrelated or misguided information.

While created primarily for people who have recently been diagnosed with cancer, this Toolbox can help anyone who is facing hard decisions and changes in life due to cancer. Family members and caregivers can also use this Toolbox on behalf of a child or anyone else affected by cancer.
