Eric Brown,
Senior Director,
Microbial Pathogenesis
The major efforts in basic research and discovery in the department of microbial pathogenesis are directed toward enhanced understanding of molecular mechanisms of disease and development of novel technologies to interrupt pathogenic events. To understand disease mechanisms, we focus on understanding of the host-pathogen interface using the techniques of modern molecular and cellular biology as well as innovative models in which to study disease in the context of an intact animal. Understanding the molecular events in pathogenesis, together with elucidation of the basic biology of pathogens during infection, provide a variety of targets for prevention and amelioration of significant infectious diseases.

We also explore new ways to deliver therapeutics to the site of infection that are both more efficient at pathogen elimination and less toxic to the host than conventional therapies. Strong interactions of microbial pathogenesis with immunology, pathology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and oncology are extremely important in our scientific endeavors and are facilitated by the collaborative atmosphere and interactive community at Genentech.

The department of microbial pathogenesis enthusiastically supports the model prevalent in the research department as a whole that the outstanding translational research required for novel drug development requires a robust and creative basic science effort.

Recruitment The Genentech microbial pathogenesis department, led by Eric Brown, Senior Director, is actively recruiting outstanding Scientists and Research Associates with records of academic excellence, who aspire to careers in microbial pathogenesis and who are committed to discovery of novel biology and therapeutics related to infectious diseases.
