Marcia Belvin Senior Scientist: Cancer Signaling & Translational Oncology |
"I started at Genentech in the fall of 2004 after having been in the biotech industry for six years. The benefits of being at Genentech were immediately clear — working in a research-driven company with extremely smart, collaborative colleagues who all share a passion for translating science into help for cancer patients."
Current Projects "Our group focuses on understanding several of the major signaling pathways that drive solid tumor growth, and using this knowledge to help determine which pathway components are the best to target, and which patients will benefit the most from inhibiting those targets. We work with compounds at various stages of development to understand the effects of those compounds in cancer cells, both as single agents and when used in combination with other drugs."
Collaborations "Collaboration is everything at Genentech. The high level of collaboration here leads to good decision-making, both in terms of quality and speed. We collaborate extensively with many groups — including Chemistry, Pharmacology, Translational Oncology, Molecular diagnostics, Bioinformatics, Pathology, and Clinical — in order to drive projects forward quickly. In addition to being one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of the job, collaborations allow me to keep learning about new areas of drug discovery."
Inspiration/Vision "Working at Genentech, you are surrounded by people who are driven by the same goal — improving patients' lives. It's a company-wide vision that motivates everyone. I feel very fortunate to have such an important goal to strive for and to work in a company with the means to achieve it."
