Bill Mallet Scientist: Cancer Targets

Profile | Education/Background | Top Scientific Papers | Awards & Honors

"I arrived at Genentech in 2002 and have focused on developing therapeutic antibodies against tumor cell markers. Genentech has offered me a place to apply and expand on my cell biology education, perform quality research, tackle significant problems in human disease, and enjoy the company of my talented and enthusiastic colleagues."

Current Projects "Cancer treatment is being revolutionized by the emergence of targeted therapies designed to act with high selectivity on malignant cells and leave the healthy tissues unaffected. The mission of my lab is to develop antibody-based cancer therapeutics, including conjugates of tumor-targeted antibodies with chemotherapeutic drugs. Working with diverse team of researchers, we identify and validate cell-surface proteins expressed by malignant cells and tissues, then evaluate strategies to target those surface proteins and eliminate the tumors. Additionally, we are defining the rules that govern how tumors respond to the antibody-drug conjugates. I am convinced that this therapeutic strategy will yield many important drugs, and I feel fortunate to be able to make a contribution."

Collaborations "No drug could ever be developed without productive interactions across disciplines, from bioinformatics through protein chemistry, in vitro and in vivo biology, and clinical science. I am grateful to have worked with and learned from researchers at every stage at Genentech. The opportunities for professional growth and learning are unlimited here."

Inspiration/Vision "Any scientist who hopes to apply their training in a meaningful way would find a home at Genentech. The data speak louder than the opinions here, and anybody with a good idea will be heard. Our senior leadership has created an environment where talent and motivation are consistently translated into novel therapeutics. Every day I value the experience of working with my colleagues to improve the lives of those with cancer."
