In 2013, Dan Chen, M.D., Ph.D. (Genentech vice president and global head of late stage cancer immunotherapy development), and Ira Mellman, Ph.D., (Genentech vice president of research cancer immunology), realized they needed a new, visual language to explain the complicated science behind how the immune system can recognize and attack cancer. The result would give them—and the rest of the field—a new map, helping to guide research on the next generation of cancer medicines. Illustrator Wendy MacNaughton met the duo to reflect on how they put together the puzzle.
