The Position

Digital Strategy & Channels is a group within Corporate Relations responsible for Genentech's corporate digital channels including, our award-winning intranet gWiz, and our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+). We also support the product and R&D communications teams, Corporate & Employee Giving, and internal communications in their digital communications initiatives. The team includes developers, project managers, content strategists, and community/content managers. 


The Digital Strategy & Channels team is responsible for all Internal and External Corporate Branded Digital Channels. Day to day operations range from triaging issues and helping end users, to developing creative channel strategies and platform road-mapping. You’ll be joining an empowered and agile group that enjoys building things and solving problems. 

Within our intranet, we have profiles pages for all of the Genentech/Roche employees. The project you would be working on are enhancements to our employee profiles.

Currently, these profiles mostly contain basic information about the employee, such as their location and job title. We want to add other features to give these profiles a more personalized touch.

Some of these features include, but are not limited to:

  • Personalizable profile text
  • Showing what clubs an employee is involved in
  • Gamification/badge system to show off achievements of an employee
  • Integration with other systems (HR, training)

Who You Are

  • 3rd or 4th year, or Graduate Student in Computer Science, Information Technology, Web Architecture or similar
  • Prior professional work experience required
  • Prior experience in health policy or health care desired, but not required

The perfect candidate will need to have a passion for all things technical and a desire to learn and grow their skills. A solid understanding of web architecture is a must, along with the ability to communicate with end users to meet their requirements.

Required Core Skills:

  • JavaScript
  • PHP
  • CSS
  • Git (At least the fundamentals)
  • Understanding of database design principles and SQL
  • Understanding of common Unix/Linux/MacOS terminal commands and system administration
  • An understanding of common web application security issues (XSS attacks, SQL injection, etc)

In addition to core skills, any experience in the following areas will be viewed as a strong plus:

Front End Skills:

  • ReactJS, or another JavaScript framework (Vue, Angular)
  • SASS, or another styling language (SCSS, Less)
  • Solid understanding of cross browser rendering, performance issues as well as responsive design across a range of devices (phone, tablet, desktop, etc)
  • Understanding of HTML5 storage mechanisms
  • Experience in writing unit-testable code
  • Experience in using a task runner and package manager (Webpack, NPM, Yarn, Gulp, Grunt, etc)

Back End Skills:

  • Laravel, or a similar back-end PHP framework (Symfony, Zend, etc)
  • Blade, or a similar HTML templating framework
  • Experience with alternative storage such as Redis
  • Experience with a unit testing suite (PHPUnit or a comparable technology)

System Administrator Skills:

  • Unix/Linux/MacOS system administration
  • Familiarity with running a LAMP/LEMP stack
  • Apache/Nginx system administration
  • Experience with running virtual machines such as Vagrant, Docker, VirtualBox, etc.

General Development Skills:

  • Git experience, as well as experience with Git repo hosting sites (Github and Gitlab)
