The Position

PURPOSE:

We are seeking a Finance Manager for the Early Stage Portfolio Committee (ESPC) Finance team within the Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) Finance organization. The incumbent will serve as a Project Finance Manager on assigned molecules within the gRED portfolio.

As a Project Finance Manager, you will use project financial data and strategic context to lead teams in delivering compelling investment proposals and robust valuations. Additionally, you must work well with a diverse set of business and finance stakeholders, successfully managing financial planning and budgeting processes and being a confident ‘voice of finance’ on molecule and cross-functional initiative teams.

We are seeking candidates who have a strong analytical background, are passionate about drug development, enthusiastic about driving smart investment decisions and willing to take smart risks by thoughtfully challenging the status quo. You should be motivated by a fast-paced and dynamic business environment, manage ambiguity positively and want to contribute to the culture of gRED Finance.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as ‘Project CFO’ for assigned molecules by:
    • owning and delivering robust and objective financial analyses and valuations of investment options
    • representing the business point of view in helping teams frame strategic development decisions
    • developing molecule financial plans (e.g., near-term budgets and long-range forecasts) in partnership with project core teams
    • partnering with assigned project teams and gRED business stakeholders to successfully execute corporate planning processes
    • being the single point of contact for the broader finance community on issues pertaining to assigned projects

  • Contribute to gRED and ESPC Finance Team Success by:
    • applying knowledge of projects as well as therapeutic and disease areas  to develop and share creative investment frameworks that can be leveraged across the portfolio
    • representing ESPC Finance or serving as lead on key planning and governance processes
    • building and maintaining strong partnerships with key customers and stakeholders
    • identifying and delivering opportunities to simplify or otherwise improve processes and systems
    • contributing to the ESPC Finance knowledge base, and taking personal responsibility for the group’s goals, culture and camaraderie

Who You Are

Requirements:

  • Strong financial analysis skills, including modeling, valuation and framing of complex financial issues
  • 5-7 years of work experience in finance, life sciences consulting, or related field
  • BA or BS in business or finance or BS in relevant scientific discipline with subsequent experience in finance or business; MBA desirable
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with, and diplomatically challenge business and finance partners to positively influence strategic decision-making
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with ability to clearly synthesize complex issues
  • High energy and passion for the bio-pharmaceutical industry and commitment to “doing now what patients need next” – prior experience in a drug development setting preferred, but not required
  • Ability to learn and apply fundamental biology and understand how it shapes clinical development strategies and commercial opportunities
  • Advanced capability with Excel/MS Office; SAP, TM1 and PlanSource experience is a plus
