We have a unique opportunity for a talented molecular biologist/protein engineer to join the drug discovery efforts within the Department of Structural Biology at Genentech. The Senior Scientific Researcher will be responsible for engineering antibodies to enable protein structure determination of challenging targets by X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM). He/She will support small molecule pipeline projects as well as basic research projects where antibody chaperones for crystallization or cryo-EM are critical tools for protein structure determination.
The Senior Scientific Researcher will be responsible for all aspects of antibody engineering and characterization, including construction of antibody phage display libraries, in vitro selection of conformation-specific antibodies by phage display, epitope binning and affinity measurement by surface plasmon resonance (SPR), sequence analysis, and small-scale antibody fragment purification. The Senior Scientific Researcher will be expected to collaborate closely with colleagues in both the Structural Biology department and across Research, effectively present their scientific findings to a broad audience, contribute to external publications, and be a productive member of multidisciplinary project teams.
Who you are:
This position requires a M.S. degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related field with 8+ years of relevant working experience or a Ph.D. with 0-3 years of postdoctoral experience. The candidate must have exceptional molecular biology skills as evidenced by a strong publication record. Experience in antibody or protein engineering, directed evolution using display technologies (phage, yeast, mRNA, or ribosome display), and a working knowledge of structural biology are a plus. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated and detail-oriented researcher, driven to solve complex scientific problems. Outstanding oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work both independently at the bench and in a collaborative environment are required.
