The Position

The Network Services team is responsible for project deployment and 24x7 operations support of Genentech's enterprise wired and wireless networks which serve over 15,000 users and are comprised of wireless access points, switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, proxies, VPN concentrators, and optical network devices. 

We are looking for a results-driven analytical thinker with strong technical and process management skills who can provide imaginative, thorough, and practicable technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.  This person will work closely with our architecture and engineering teams as well as vendors to maintain 99.99% availability while successfully deploying emerging network technologies to new and existing Genentech buildings and data centers.

Candidate must have good business acumen and possess strong communication and teamwork skills.  We are looking for an individual with strong time management skills who can work autonomously making sound decisions that are consistent with organizational objectives.  You must have a proven track record for delivering excellence thus enabling us to meet the scientific demands of our biotechnology revolution in information technologies.


As a Network Engineer II, you are responsible for:

  • Operating company's internal data communications systems.
  • Planning, designing and implementing local and wide-area network solutions between multiple platforms and protocols (including IP and VOIP).
  • Supporting/troubleshooting network issues and coordinates with vendors for installation of such items as routers and switches.
  • Working on project implementation.
  • Conducting project planning, cost analysis and vendor comparisons.
  • Interacting with clients/stakeholders, both internal or external
  • Troubleshooting and supporting wireless infrastructure (Cisco Wireless Controllers, Access Points and Cisco Prime)
  • Installing, supporting, and upgrading Cisco Wireless Controllers and Access Points in an Enterprise environment.
  • Utilizing Cisco Prime to create building maps for wireless



  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a high availability operational large campus environment.


  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent work experience.
  • Background in RF propagation principles and communication systems engineering.
  • Cisco CCNA Wireless Certification required.  CWNA a plus as well as CCDA, CCDP or CCNA 


  • Expert knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
  • Strong knowledge of Cisco Catalyst switches (6500, 4500, 9400 and 3700) and various routers in a high speed, redundant, complex, large enterprise.
  • Strong knowledge of Arista switches
  • Strong knowledge in routing theory and protocols especially with BGP and OSPF configuration and analysis in large enterprises with multimedia applications such as video conferencing/streaming and VoIP
  • Strong working knowledge of DHCP and DNS
  • Strong knowledge of troubleshooting methodologies as they apply to resolving complex technical network problems.  Must have experience using packet capture devices and network troubleshooting tools.
  • Knowledge of wireless technologies including 802.11n/ac protocols, including extensive knowledge of wireless troubleshooting.
  • Cisco Wireless Network Design, Implementation and Optimization. Must have strong 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz RF knowledge
  • Working knowledge of Voice-over-IP and IP Telephony services as well as Quality of Service (QoS) and Power over Ethernet (PoE).
  • Working knowledge of security devices such as firewalls, proxies, and VPNs in addition to a strong understanding of authentication and data encryption.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively in fast paced work environment
  • Experience in designing, deploying, and managing network projects.
  • Good organizational and personal communications skills. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service.
  • Project management skills a plus.
