The Position

The Pilot Plant Technical Specialist will be an integral member of the Cell Culture Pilot Plant.. A successful candidate will perform research and development operations and execute process development experiments in close collaboration with Cell Culture Researchers, Process Development Engineering, Automation and Engineering Solutions, and act as a member of a high functioning team.  These tasks will include those associated with coordinating and performing operations (i.e. set up, inoculating, maintaining, harvesting and cleaning fermentors) as well as experiment data recording, collection, and analysis. The successful candidate is expected to be a liaison between Operations and the Pilot Plant customers and offer operational expertise, attentive customer service, and work as an integral partner in the successful execution of experiments. He/she will provide and spearhead troubleshooting assistance with equipment and processes, and be a trainer for other technicians and support personnel. The role will have a specific focus on continuous process improvement, new technology/process implementation and will design experiments and apply theories to execute projects.  He/she will lead and manage independent projects as well as participate on cross-functional teams as a representative of the Cell Culture Pilot Plant. 

The right candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • BA/BS in life sciences or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years of hands-on cell culture experience and a familiarity with lab techniques and processing.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge and experience with computer systems.
  • Ability to work independently to coordinate and perform operations and tasks associated with cell culture experiments.
  • Solid knowledge about CHO and E. coli processes, and experience with analytical instruments is preferred.
  • Strong focus on collaboration and customer service with attention to detail, analytical ability and intellectual curiosity. Ability to work effectively on a team with diverse skills and objectives and interact with customers in a productive manner.
  • Operational and technical troubleshooting skills and creative problem solving ability.
  • Project coordination/management skills with the demonstrated ability to take a projects from idea inception to implementation.
  • Ability to communicate and present information timely, clearly, confidently, and concisely, and offer relevant views and information to impact decisions.
  • High level of demonstrated initiative, flexibility in work approach, and demonstrated strong follow through and accountability.
  • Self-driven to learn and keep current with new technology developments.
  • Flexibility to ensure that all cell culture operations are supported to meet run schedule demands while managing other areas of responsibility such as project support, while working in a complex R&D production environment running 24 x 7.
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds.
