The Position

We are seeking an Associate Scientist in the Oncology Biomarker Development group. We seek a highly motivated and capable associate scientist to contribute to biomarker research efforts in support of Genentech’s drug development pipeline in cancer immunotherapy (CIT). 

The successful candidate is expected to design and execute laboratory experiments, manage collaborations to generate data regarding disease biology and play a role in reviewing and assessing the relevance of available biomarker data from clinical studies to develop scientific questions and testable hypotheses. He/ She will have excellent oral and written communication skills, participate and contribute to team meetings, work in a collaborative environment and have flexibility in order to focus on high priority goals of the department and program teams.  The candidate will have evidence of strong writing skills and significant scientific contributions, such as first authorship on peer-reviewed manuscripts.

Scope of position:

This position is in the Oncology Biomarker Development (OBD) department within the Development Sciences Division of Genentech Research and Early Development. The successful candidate will be responsible for biomarker research efforts supporting one or more molecules and diseases for Cancer Immunotherapy.   The scope of biomarker activities will span predictive, pharmacodynamic, prognostic biomarkers, surrogate response markers of efficacy to better understand mechanisms of action, response and resistance. The candidate will be responsible for contributing to Genentech research into the immunobiology of cancer, generating insights, performing hypothesis testing and target validation and discovery.


Job Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and analyze laboratory experiments in the areas of cancer immunobiology
  • Aid in the generation and analysis of large-scale, genomic, phenotypic, and molecular data from internal and external sources.
  • Collaborate with scientists across different departments at Genentech to accomplish research goals
  • Effective communicator of ideas, project goals and results. Organizes and independently presents work at department, company and/or and project team meetings. Presentations are clear and effective.
  • Effective written communicator of ideas and results. Independently completes internal technical reports and manuscripts and may be a co-author or primary author. Writing requires little revision, and authors documents independently and of high quality. May independently contribute to regulatory submissions as appropriate. May edit and review internal reports written by others.
  • Actively participates, Demonstrates and fosters teamwork at the group, department, and team levels. Represents department in team meetings. Acts as a resource within the department in a recognized subject or technology.
  • Defines approaches and expectations to achieve pre-defined goals to team.
  • Provides timely feedback. Anticipates resource needs.

Job Requirements

  • Ph.D. in life science, with 2 years work experience/ postdoctoral experience in a related field, industry experience preferred.
  • A flexible mindset, with strong interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills.
  • Successful demonstration of initiative, teamwork, collaboration and technical expertise as an independent and creative scientist.
  • Experience with high throughput omics data analysis.
  • Ability to create and establish priorities, manage work plans, and meet timelines.
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, implement, and become proficient in novel laboratory techniques.
  • Expertise in human immunology, cancer immunotherapy, oncology, cancer cell signaling pathways, and translational research is highly desirable.
