The Position

Genentech is hiring a data scientist to help shape the future of People Analytics.  The perfect candidate will have experience building products that support data-driven decision-making. You are focused on results, a self-starter, and have demonstrated success in data science projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute ideas, design and algorithms that will influence people outcomes across Genentech; Design and execute experiments to test them

  • Understand and translate business needs into data modeling initiatives

  • Produce results from analyses that will be used to drive HR investments, talent management decisions, and changes to the fundamental delivery of HR services across Genentech

  • Communicate complex statistical concepts to non-technical audience in both written and verbal mediums; Provide coaching and training on use and interpretation of data

  • Influence human resources and senior business leaders through strong communication skills and deep subject matter expertise in order to turn insights into action and impact

  • Be an active thought partner to People Analytics and our internal customers, including the most senior business leaders, from design to execution across the experiments we run, the surveys we design, the analyses we execute, and the reports (both ad hoc and standard) that we deliver

  • Develop understanding of Genentech/Roche data environment and build relationships with key local and global stakeholders (partners, customers, and broader analytics community)

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across HR and the business

Requirements:

Education

  • Masters Degree or PhD in a quantitative field (Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Operations Research, Biostatistics, etc).  PhD preferred

Business Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience delivering models and algorithms that drive business decisions and improve business outcomes

  • Demonstrable leadership in the field: research publications, conference presentations, speaking engagements

  • No prior HR experience is required, but should have strong desire to learn the domain

Specialized Knowledge / Skills

  • Proficiency in one or both of R and python

  • Fluency in SQL and RDBMS

  • Experience developing shared code (e.g., git and unit testing, programming patterns, libraries/packages) and creating data pipelines

  • Proficiency with classical statistics and machine learning approaches to fitting models and estimating their performance

  • Experience creating data visualizations and dashboards that distill complex analyses into meaningful and accessible insights and recommendations

  • Presentation, influencing, and storytelling skills

  • Ability to prioritize and manage projects independently. Self-starter/self-motivated, capable of staying on track and pursuing solutions without close supervision

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate project status to both technical and non-technical team members and client representatives

  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
