The Position

The Corporate and Employee Giving Team supports reputation, engages employees and benefits our communities through grants and programs. Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of all patients, and create a future of science that is more diverse, inclusive, and equitable, unlocking Genentech’s ability to fully deliver on its purpose. The Senior Manager, Charitable Giving, will be responsible for evolving Genentech’s giving towards a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Senior Manager will lead efforts to create greater cohesion, alignment, and focus of charitable giving towards a diversity, equity and inclusion focus by:

  • Developing cross-portfolio goals, metrics, and guiding principles
  • Spearheading new cross-functional project teams to drive portfolio alignment and source new opportunities for giving
  • Leading team development, training, and learning opportunities to deepen understanding of best practice, and
  • Strengthening internal and external partnerships

The Senior Manager will also assume day-to-day leadership of The Resilience Effect, Genentech’s signature philanthropic program addressing the health impacts of childhood adversity in the Bay Area. This includes implementing and evolving the program’s three-year strategy and grants portfolio, focused on improving the health and wellbeing of low-income children and families affected by adversity in the Bay Area through the pediatric healthcare system. The role will focus on launching and expanding giving portfolios focused on clinical innovation, community partnerships, research, and policy/advocacy. In addition, the individual will oversee communications, skills-based volunteering projects, and regional convening efforts surrounding the program.

The position requires an individual who is strategic, curious, committed to impact, solves problems, and has the ability to take smart risks. The individual will oversee one contractor position dedicated to The Resilience Effect, and will report to the Associate Director of Charitable Giving, who is responsible for oversight of corporate giving strategy and programs, including The Resilience Effect.

Responsibilities: Charitable Giving

  • Oversee evolution of the corporate giving portfolio towards grantmaking and programs that drive greater equity and inclusion for historically marginalized communities
  • Deepen internal understanding, commitment, and capabilities to bring a diversity, equity and inclusion lens to grantmaking and philanthropic programs
  • Drive alignment across giving portfolios focused on improving pathways to STEM careers and advancing patient health outcomes
  • Serve as a strategic consultant to various grantmaking teams, deepening shared learning, collaboration, and impact measurement of giving strategies 
  • Partner with Corporate Communications to support aligned, impactful storytelling about Genentech’s charitable efforts
  • Drive deeper partnership between charitable giving and relevant experts and partners across the business
  • Partner with the Giving Operations team to improve the end-to-end grantee experience applying for funds from Genentech
  • Partner with the Giving Operations team to support analytics and impact measurement associated with the overall grantmaking portfolio
  • Integrate philanthropic and shared value best practice across the grantmaking portfolio
  • Support special projects within Corporate and Employee Giving and/or Corporate Relations as needed

Responsibilities: The Resilience Effect

  • Oversee key grantmaking programs and partnerships as part of The Resilience Effect, Genentech’s signature philanthropic program to address the health impacts of childhood adversity in the Bay Area
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key grantees and external partners essential to delivering on the goals of the strategy and extending Genentech’s impact beyond individual grants
  • Manage one contractor position responsible for grantee engagement, partnership development, grants management, skills-based volunteering and employee engagement associated with the program
  • Ensure overall compliance and policy alignment of the Resilience Effect grants portfolio

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 6 or more years’ relevant experience
  • 3 or more years in corporate philanthropy or private foundation program management and grantmaking, ideally with an equity and/or public health focus
  • Background in public health, healthcare and/or biotechnology industry a plus
  • High-level proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Business travel for internal and external meetings as required

  • Knowledge in the area of corporate giving, strategic grantmaking, shared value, and concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Versatility to translate strategic imperatives into tangible execution
  • Experience managing vendors (e.g., strategic consulting, communications, evaluation) and other internal colleagues supporting and executing corporate philanthropy or related strategies and activities
  • Effective team player and relationship builder with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and seniority levels
  • Consistently drives collaboration across stakeholders and partners
  • Strong influencing and negotiation skills
  • Strong executive presence and outstanding communications and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to communicate concisely and translate complicated topics into lay language relevant across a variety of audiences
  • Previous experience managing and evaluating large-scale budgets
  • Skilled in taking on new challenges, navigating ambiguity and striving for clarity
  • High ethical standards and integrity; strong humility and discretion
  • Ability, comfort, and commitment to operating in a highly regulated environment, requiring compliance with company policies and external requirements
