The Position

The Principal Design Lead is the subject matter expert for Access Solutions (AS) operations, marketing, field partners and beyond, ensuring the patient access program is equipped to meet the evolving needs of patients and providers. The Principal Design Lead is also accountable for leading a cross-functional program team to develop customer insights that drive program strategy and design to assist with patients starting and staying on therapy.  The Principal Design Lead will also possess deep marketplace expertise and champion coaching and knowledge sharing across the community of practice and beyond with other key stakeholders. The Principal serves as primary consultant to PEL and is an internal/ spokesperson for the access program. The Principal Design lead is responsible for key strategy decisions.

The Principal Design Lead position reports to the Patient Experience Lead (PEL) as an individual contributor.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities: 

  • Drives senior level leadership and Squad on patient access decisions.
  • Defines program design and strategy serving as a key member of the PEL leadership team.
  • Influences operations and field leadership in the development and implementation of innovative access service strategies that shape the patient experience.
  • Lead development of 90-Day and 3-5 year strategic plans.
  • Drive financial modeling, forecasting, and in-depth analyses for patient access and reimbursement programs to meet AS strategic and operational objectives.
  • Demonstrates in-depth expertise in therapeutic area, market dynamics, and customer insights trends at the macro level.
  • Leader of cross-program collaboration through Community of Practices.
  • Primary internal proxy for Patient Experience Lead when required for complex matter pertaining to program objectives.
  • As necessary, be solely responsible for outsourced programs/services and oversee Vendor Contracting relationships and management including compliance, finance, and drug safety where there are no other internal parties accountable.
  • Business travel is required to support business needs.

Recommended Skills and Experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. business, finance, healthcare management, public policy) or equivalent experience; MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
  • 12-15 years of professional industry experience in healthcare/healthcare reimbursement, pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry (analytics, operations management, business finance, etc.).
  • Knowledge of AS services that support Genentech’s patient-centric business.
  • Strong consulting, meeting management, and group process facilitation skills.
  • Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Experience in other functions within the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or related industry (e.g., field account management, field reimbursement, field sales, product marketing, managed care marketing, customer service and operations, etc.).
  • Cross functional team leadership and ability to mobilize colleagues across CMG.
  • Ability to prioritize and make trade off decisions to ensure activities are focused and high impact with a patient centric mindset.
  • Expertise in building collaborative working relationships with cross-functional departments and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop situational assessments, objectives and strategies, and meaningful tactics that align with key objectives and 90-day priorities.
  • Expertise in all aspects of patient access.
  • Ability to influence and inspire individuals and teams across the CMG network, from front-line employees to the executive level.
  • Deep knowledge of entities that impact the patient journey (e.g. HCPs, payers, distributors, specialty pharmacies, etc.) and how they run their business.
  • Ability to think with an enterprise mindset.
  • Breadth of experience in product/therapeutic area and managed care landscape.
  • Ability to flex and thrive in an ambiguous environment undergoing transformational change.
  • Lead ‘fit for purpose’ and ‘flexibly deployed’ work teams that span across the CMG network.
