Pharma Global Technical Operations (PT) is the organization that manufactures and delivers Roche’s groundbreaking therapies to 127 million patients around the world. PT is involved in producing every Roche medicine – from the development process through clinical trials – and continuing to product maturity. Since 2005, Genentech has been expanding its facilities in Oceanside, about 35 miles north of San Diego. Today, the campus spans 60 acres and includes a multi-product, biotech manufacturing and clinical operations complex. The Site is licensed for drug substance manufacturing of multiple medicines and is currently in the process of bringing in additional products to the site (at clinical and commercial phase).

The Head, Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSHE) position at Oceanside offers a unique and exciting opportunity for a senior leader to enable, coach, lead and inspire people.
Reporting to the VP & General Manager of Oceanside you will be a member of the Oceanside leadership team and a member of the extended Pharma Technical Operations (PT) Leadership Team. By leading an agile organization with a mindset and culture that engages our employees to bring our medicines and services to more patients faster, you will be able to influence how we as a company ensure long-term sustainability in manufacturing excellence. The Head SSHE is responsible for ensuring the site's continuous Right to Operate and Employee Engagement (or Respect for People), by developing and sustaining proactive programs and procedures that comply with applicable laws, regulatory agency standards, and Corporate directives that result in excellent performance.
In this role you will develop and drive proactive behaviors and mindset that will result in a safe and compliant workplace, and demonstrate respect for our people and environment. They will ensure the site is compliant with safety legislation and that safety policies, and practices (both protective and preventive) are adopted and adhered to, promoting a positive health and safety culture in the workplace.

You hold a Bachelor’s Degree required (science, safety, engineering, or industrial hygiene preferred); Graduate or higher-level degree preferred.
Professional certification in safety, industrial hygiene or other relevant discipline is preferred
At least fifteen (15) years’ program management and leadership experience in an integrated research and development or manufacturing organization in process industries (pharmaceutical, petroleum, chemical, etc.)
5 or more years' people management experience
5 or more years' health, safety, environmental experience in a manufacturing environment, Pharma or Biotechnology experience is preferred
Expert knowledge related to environment risk assessment, incident investigation, root cause analysis and management systems
Expert knowledge of health & safety, security regulatory requirements, risk management, and business continuity.
Proficient at utilizing relevant security technology and equipment, i.e. Everbrite
Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels.

Partner with the Oceanside Leadership Team on strategic business direction and decisions.
Build and maintain strong partnerships with other network leaders to promote collaboration and assure alignment around strategic projects and day-to-day activities and to assure mutually successful working relationship.
Represents the organizational or program unit as a prime internal and external contact on matters of significance to the company.
Accountable for overall budget and financial performance of the SSHE organization, including controlling budgets for security operations.
Serve as final decision maker and spokesperson for the SSHE organization for the site.
Represent Genentech to public, regulatory authority, trade groups and industry on all issues requiring SSHE expertise.
Develop, maintain, and continuously improve SSHE programs at the site that comply with relevant regulatory agency permits, laws and standards, and Roche Corporate SSHE directives and policies.
Develop, practice and improve programs that ensure effective response in the event of a disaster or outage, with a focus on life safety.
Inventory, prioritize, and proactively mitigate SSHE risks across the site, through functional engagement and ownership.
Build and sustain a strong leadership commitment to safety at the site that is clearly evident on the shop floor and throughout the organization.
Share and adopt best practices from across industry and the Roche network, through active participation in the SSHE network council, Group SSHE, and network forums.
Acts as leader during site emergency situations
Serves as Roche SSHE Officer
Maintain security of site premises, assets and personnel through oversight of site security operations, and health services.
Responsible for site compliance with all Federal, State, local and Genentech Environmental, Health and Safety codes, regulations and policies.
Investigate accidents and incidents, where necessary help with updated designs along with other procedural changes to prevent re-occurrence.
Develop, practice and improve programs that ensure business continuity in the event of business disruptive events (i.e. pandemic response)
