We are seeking a highly innovative and motivated anatomic pathologist to join the gRED Research Pathology Department as a Scientist / Senior Scientist / Principal Scientist position (rank equivalent to assistant / associate / full professor in academia). This pathologist will support our expanding emphasis on digital pathology, image analysis, and machine learning. This position will have a focus on generating novel biological insights from pathologic tissue samples using advanced AI and image analysis techniques on histological and single and highly multiplexed in situ protein and RNA assays.
The candidate will bring additional digital pathology expertise into our division, have an interest in working within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment (including bioinformatics, oncology, immunology, neuroscience, image analysis, and biomarker development), and have the ability to forge strong links with individual contributors and cross-functional teams, providing consultative expertise and pathologic interpretation for translational applications of tissue-based assays. This role requires leadership in experimental design, supervised implementation, and morphologic interpretation of features extracted from tissue in the context of the current molecular and cellular biology concepts. The Department of Research Pathology is embedded within Genentech’s Research and Early Development (gRED) Organization, and works to ensure that strategies for the treatment and cure of disease are based on accurate analyses of pathogenic mechanisms. The Department pathologists collaborate with and provide expert pathology support to research scientists in the discovery, characterization, and preclinical development of novel therapeutic products for a variety of human diseases. These include diseases caused by malignant transformation, or dysfunction of the nervous or immune systems. The scientist support effort includes participation on teams devoted to the development of predictive and prognostic markers in many of these diseases. At Genentech, our scientists have access to cutting edge equipment and techniques, and pathology core laboratory facilities and personnel. The core laboratories include necropsy, histology, immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, clinical pathology, tissue banking, translational tissue technologies, and advanced light microscopy, including confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, and digital pathology.
You have an MD or DVM or its foreign equivalent, appropriate Board Certification(s) in Pathology, or Board Eligibility, and scholarly productivity in a relevant field of biomedical research.
A Ph.D. degree in a related field, in addition to the MD or equivalent degree, is desirable, but not required. We seek candidates who can utilize digital pathology and image analysis in the context of a detailed and current understanding of molecular, cellular, and systems biology.
You have previous experience evaluating and implementing novel tissue-based assay and/or analytical techniques.
You have hands-on experience in translational pathology tools and technology, including assay or digital pathology image analysis algorithm development.
Your experience may include these specific skills) immunohistochemistry, including multiplexed immunofluorescence; ii) Spatial or single-cell transcriptomics iii) Quantitative image analysis including artificial intelligence or machine learning, or iv) Advanced microscopy applications
You may also have quantitative analytical skills to utilize large scale data sets in pre-clinical and clinical studies and demonstrated understanding of machine learning, preferably deep learning, and algorithm development with Python and/or MATLAB in the imaging or computer vision field.
You are able to handle several projects at any given time and can distill complex issues and clearly articulate solutions.
You are self motivated and you will drive to create innovative solutions to solve complex problems in a team environment.
You have an interest in adapting and utilizing emerging technologies in pathology.
You have the ability to work successfully in cross-functional teams that contribute to basic scientific discoveries, development of drug targets and biomarkers.
You have excellent scientific communication skills: verbally and in writing; in informal 1-1 settings, team meetings, and formal seminars. Effective communication is essential and includes presentations at cross-functional teams, internal review committees, and external conferences, and will also involve writing reports and scientific publication.
You have demonstrated learning agility, adaptability, collaborative skills, strong influencing skills and delivering results through teamwork.
You have a strong desire to contribute to our mission of translating basic science and expertise into meaningful, long-lasting benefit for patients.
You have an understanding of bioinformatics and data science concepts as they relate to digital pathology infrastructure and workflows.
You can cross-functionally interact with bioinformatics, pathology, imaging sciences, and basic and translational scientific colleagues to advocate for, implement, and integrate digital pathology solutions.
