Genentech has an outstanding opportunity available for a motivated and highly accomplished Pathologist to lead our Pathology Department within Research. This position offers the opportunity to further develop a science-focused pathology career, with strong potential for direct and widespread impact on patient well-being, in a highly interactive, data-driven environment that fosters a culture of scientific investigation and publication.
The incumbent will carry out his or her responsibilities at Genentech's campus in South San Francisco, CA. He or she will report to Dr. Morgan Sheng, Vice President, Neuroscience, within the Genentech Research organization. The Head of Research Pathology is responsible for the objectives, strategy and implementation of all Research Pathology efforts that support lab scientists engaged in drug discovery within Genentech's Research organization. The Department Head is also responsible for ensuring that high quality pathology support is provided to laboratory and clinical scientists engaged in biomarker strategy/development/deployment across the drug development pipeline. These latter activities are carried out within the Genentech Development organization and can extend into "late stage" clinical development efforts (Phase III clinical trials). The Research Pathology department provides Research and Development personnel with intellectual and technical expertise concerning pathology-related study design, tissue selection, microscopic interpretation, analytical techniques, and support for regulatory and clinical queries. The Pathologists' collaborative support of R and D scientists include histopathology interpretive expertise informed by traditional diagnostic categories and by detailed and current understanding of molecular and cellular biology. These activities include provision of cutting edge technology platforms for analysis of fresh, frozen and formalin-fixed paraffin embedded tissues and cell lines used to assess (i) new therapeutic targets and pathways and (ii) biomarkers relevant to diagnosing and treating human disease. The Department is comprised of 11 highly trained, board-certified pathologists who collaborate directly with investigators and oversee all pathology support activities. The Department also manages 6 core pathology laboratories that include necropsy, clinical pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry/ in situ hybridization, a human tissue biorepository, and advanced light microscopy, electron microscopy and digital pathology. The Department Head will be responsible for leading and developing the more than 65 internal and external staff, including the group of 11 Pathologists and more than 50 pathology laboratory staff. This is a highly impactful role, responsible for creating, managing and coordinating the intellectual and technical aspects of pathology support responsibilities that (i) are deployed across Genentech's three major therapeutic discovery/development areas (oncology, immunology, neuroscience), (ii) span both of Genentech's major R and D functions (Research and Development), (iii) extend to support for some "late stage"/Phase III clinical trials activities, and (iv) are carried out cross-functionally with other research and discovery teams at Genentech.
