The Position

Genentech’s Research and Early Development Organization is seeking a Senior Director, Head of Human Genetics to oversee and guide our efforts to leverage human genetics for target and biomarker discovery. Located in South San Francisco and reporting to Dr. Eric Brown, Vice President, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, the Head of Human Genetics will be responsible for the objectives, strategy and implementation of all our human genetics work, and for leading and developing a group of highly trained geneticists and computational scientists. The Head of Human Genetics will also be part of Eric Brown’s Leadership Team. Key partnerships for Human Genetics include Bioinformatics, various Therapeutic & Biomarker discovery groups, and the Clinical Development organizations within Genentech and Roche. Current efforts are focused on the application and analysis of next-gen sequencing in clinical trials and large case/control cohorts. The Head of Human Genetics also will be responsible for identifying and advancing novel high priority projects that enhance the role of human genetics in drug discovery. For example, targeted and genome-wide phenotype screens, saturation mutagenesis, and strategies to understand function and enrich for functional variants. In addition to guiding the research activities of the Human Genetics Department, the Senior Director will have ample time and resources to pursue his/her own research interests in a collaborative, interactive environment of Genentech Research.

Qualifications:

MD, MD/PhD, or PhD with 10+ years of human genetics research and leadership experience, preferably on projects that impact target identification, biomarker identification, and/or drug discovery. The ideal candidate will be an internationally recognized leader in the field of human genetics, as evidenced by multiple publications in top tier journals, presentations international meetings, and service on scientific strategy and review panels. The candidate must also demonstrate evidence of successful strategic leadership through positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in his/her home institution and in national and international organizations. Excellent communication skills and evidence of success in complex, multidisciplinary environments is required. The ideal candidate will have the ability to successfully lead, recruit and cultivate a high achieving organization that attracts, develops, motivates and retains key talent.
