Sr. Manager of MOLS R&D Media Preparation & Glass Wash
This position is responsible for operational, technical and compliance leadership in the SSF Site Operations MOLS (Material Operations Lab Services) organization.  This leader will be a senior member of the MOLS leadership team, which is tasked with accountability for all work performed by the Media Prep and Lab Services Teams.  Specific management responsibilities will focus on overseeing operations in the gRED and PTD Media Prep, Glass Wash and gSupply areas. This Sr. Manager position will report to the Associate Director of MOLS.

Key Responsibilities include:

Manage team of Supervisors responsible for providing business critical glass wash, media preparation and gSupply services to a variety of customer groups within gRED and PTD. Provide appropriate coaching and direction to ensure the ongoing development and high performance of individual leaders on this team. 2nd level reports (Technicians) consists of ~50% regular Genentech employees and ~50% contractors.

Develop a culture of Continuous Process Improvement. LEAN tools and Operational Excellence communication mechanisms should be fully leveraged to bring about important improvements to operational activities and business processes. Ensure appropriate senior leadership support for resourcing and rewarding continuous process improvement (CPI) initiatives.  Explore innovative technologies for improving how work is performed (efficiency, quality, safety).

Continually seek opportunities to create value for our customers and ensure high customer satisfaction. Identify key stakeholder groups and individuals and build strong communication and collaboration channels.  Hold frequent discussions regarding quality of services as well as future needs.  Build effective business cases for adding new services. Work closely with scientists in the PTD Media development group to understand evolving changes to media development strategy.

Develop technical expertise for media preparation within the Media Prep teams.  Technical strengths should include understanding the science behind media development and developing mastery of the equipment and instruments used in media preparation and glass washing processes. Participate in industry forums/benchmarking to ensure site is employing and influencing best practices.  Partner with media and glass prep organizations across the network on sharing best practices.

Cost Center financial management. Manage budget and participate in the routine review and planning processes.  Department budget is ~ $7M.

Who You Are

This leadership position requires a very sound background in media preparation, glass wash operations (or related operational environment), and biopharmaceutical processes coupled with a dedication to mentoring, developing, and leading a team of talented people leaders.

Specific job requirements are:
  • BS or higher in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, BS/BA or higher in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Business Management or equivalent. MBA a plus.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience with media preparation, glass wash activities, or relevant biopharmaceutical operations.
  • Minimum 12 years of management experience required with experience leading managers or supervisors. Experience managing an outsource service provider is desired. 
  • Outstanding analytical skills and financial acumen.  Capable of analyzing, synthesizing and summarizing financial and/or qualitative data and translating such into high-impact learning and opportunities. 
  • Working knowledge of GMP, GLP and related health authority compliance requirements. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills: has proven abilities to work effectively and efficiently in cross-functional teams. 
  • Successful demonstration of collaboration and teamwork.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams through business critical problem solving and change.
  • Demonstrated experience leading a performance based, customer focused operational organization using effective client relationship and collaboration skills to manage multiple business relationships.
  • Excellent written, oral and presentation communication skills
Passion for continuous process improvement. LEAN or other Operational Excellence training and experience a plus.
