The Position

Global Pharma Procurement (GPP) is a key function at Roche. Through our purchasing processes, we identify opportunities to leverage and manage expenditures to third parties. These include direct expenditures in areas such as raw materials, active pharmaceutical ingredients and contract manufacturing, as well as indirect expenses such as clinical and research services, laboratory supplies, digital marketing, creative agencies and market research, consulting, temporary labor, travel, credit cards, facilities management, logistics and engineering.

As a strategic function, GPP works closely with all Roche divisions and business units to better understand our business partners' needs, help them deliver their goals and identify savings opportunities that can be reinvested into the business.

The Global Category Lead is a leadership role and leads the Laboratory / Biomarkers Category Team. In this role you will be responsible to maximize the value of third party purchases to Roche across multiple laboratory and biomarkers categories. You will be responsible for developing in-depth knowledge of markets, suppliers, products and their cost drivers within this category. You will maintain category specific knowledge by analysing and benchmarking the respective category and together with the business identify the needs to develop strategies that enhance overall business values.

This role will be the key global interface with senior leaders across all business partners; you will liaise with Roche senior leaders (PD, pRED, gRED, PDMA, Diagnostics, Ventana, FMI, RMS) to ensure that the category strategy is developed and implemented according to business requirements. Leading a team of Category Managers may be part of the role.

In addition you will:

  • Maintain an oversight of the category including ongoing management of spend and demand. You will ensure the category managers develop, refine and implement category strategies in assigned categories
  • Drive the global master service agreement process across Roche and with suppliers safeguarding Roche’s best interests at all times. Set strategies to manage pricing negotiations ensuring competitive market prices are applied. You will drive and contribute to the over departmental savings objectives
  • Analyse Market, Category and Supplier, including financial risks, spend history, trends, demands and forecasts. You will identify opportunities that focus on cost reductions, efficiency/quality improvements, risk mitigation, industry and supply trends and shifts in technology
  • Manage supplier’s performance and perform risk management. Develop and maintain metrics of procurement i.e. key performance indicators and continuously improve the outcomes measured
  • Decision-Making Authority: you will prepare and present commercial recommendations to business for supplier selection. Grant exceptions to bypass the procurement process. Report non-compliant behaviour. Maintain accountability for commercial contract terms.

This position can be based in Basel (Switzerland) (preferred location), Welwyn Garden City (UK) or South San Francisco (US).

Who You Are

You have a University degree (MBA desirable) in Business Administration or Business Economics, ideally with focus on Life Sciences. Your professional career preferably shows several years of relevant experience in Pharmaceutical Development, CRO functionality and the management of clinical trials. You have at least 5 years of experience in procurement, preferably in Scientific / Laboratory / Biomarkers procurement and sourcing of services, supported by a procurement-related qualification. You have experience of working in international matrix organizations across functions and cultures. People leadership experience is regarded as an advantage.

In addition you bring:

  • Demonstrated strategic agility with strong financial acumen. Ability to take a process or project into implementation. Project management and program management experience
  • Excellent influencing, convincing and interpersonal skills, enabling you to engage and manage expectations of senior management, particularly Finance and R&D Operations
  • Highly effective at initiating and leading cross functional teams by building internal and external relationships that create alignment.
  • Risk and financial analysis skills and the ability to interpret and utilize key financial data
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. Fluency in English, both written & spoken (second language desirable)
