This role resides within Genentech’s Pharma Technical Development (PTD) division. The group focuses on driving performance effectiveness (i.e., productivity, efficiency, capacity, etc.) of technical development systems and processes, leading continuous improvement initiatives, and providing project management expertise and cross-portfolio insights to support governance decision-making and governance operations. As a member of the Global PTDM organization, the role participates in staff meetings, global forums and department initiatives.
Strategic Portfolio Management
Identify, drive, and lead portfolio-based strategic initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of business and planning processes.
Partner with leadership teams, project managers, and the Portfolio Reporting & Analytics group to conduct cross-project analyses to identify portfolio trends; portfolio benchmarks; identify common issues, areas for enhancement and best practices; and provide insight and recommendations for enhancing CMC (Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls) performance.
Support Technical Development Teams (TDTs) and strategic initiative teams by providing portfolio level context, strategic frameworks, facilitations, tools, guidelines, methodology, and processes across projects to enable teams, management, and governance committees to make informed decisions for projects.
Provide senior management and committees with portfolio insights, effective and efficient governance operation processes, and recommendations to enable informed project and portfolio decisions.
TDT Project Management
Serve as strategic and technical partner to CMC Technical Development Leader (TDL), helping to drive CMC strategy in alignment with development team goals and technical functions.
Facilitate and manage project teams and monitoring of critical path and team activities, including documenting meetings, decisions, risks and actions; cross-functional communication; and tracking of technical deliverables
Establish and maintain CMC aspects of functionally integrated project schedules to enable accurate project, financial and portfolio analyses, and ensure accurate inputs are provided into business planning processes
Apply drug development knowledge to different technical platforms such as large molecule, device, small molecule, version change and/or antibody drug conjugate in either the research & development, late stage or post market phases, in order to drive CMC teams to informed decision making, and optimal alignment of all technical deliverables within the Project Team System
Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for streamlining team and business processes, serving as advocate and role model for integrating change into organization
TDT and Governance Operations
Be a strategic partner and consultant to TDTs, Governance Committee Chairs and Functional Heads to support and/or lead strategic innovation experiments that are relevant and impactful for their areas.
Contribute a leadership culture of innovation/smart risk taking by promoting out-of-the-box thinking, bringing new concepts to the TDTs, management, and governance committees.
Design pilots, support implementations, track result and share learning across teams.
The right candidate will possess the following skills and experience. The level of the position will depend on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, business or a related discipline. Advanced degree in related field is strongly preferred.
7+ years of relevant experience in biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical device, diagnostic, management consulting or other relevant industry; 10+ years for the Principal level role.
Prior CMC team experience, technical knowledge of small and/or large molecule process development and a sound knowledge of the drug development process are a plus.
Demonstrated track record in leading cross functional strategic initiatives, driving innovation, and leading changes.
Prior experience in a leadership role strongly preferred for the Principal level.
Strong understanding of pharmaceutical/biotech industry, drug and technical development process and trends.
Solid understanding of CMC key components and scientific principles.
Strong strategic thinking, as well as quantitative and analytical skills. Ability to synthesize and draw conclusions out of large, complex information and articulate the key findings to management, functional leaders and the TDT.
Ability to build cross-functional partnerships and engage in and lead cross-functional initiatives with technical teams and other key stake holders.
Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence without authority at senior management and team levels, and be effective at team work.
Self-starter and takes initiatives to identify critical business needs, takes risk, and creates solutions with an innovative mind-set. High level of comfort in dealing with uncertainties and ambiguities.
