Funding Priorities

The Genentech Foundation is a U.S.-based, private charitable foundation whose donations are made possible by contributions from Genentech. The foundation supports organizations that have a clear mission, a well-defined target service population, programs with a meaningful impact, and are aligned with the focus areas below.

Health Science Education

The Foundation funds schools, universities and nonprofit organizations committed to furthering health science education to help develop the next generation of scientists. We are currently directing a majority of our health science education funds towards two areas:

  • Pre- and post-doctoral research fellowships at U.S. universities
  • Undergraduate minority summer research programs at U.S. universities

Patient Support

The Foundation focuses on national and select local programs that provide support through the diagnosis and treatment of the disease and improving their ability to obtain appropriate health care for serious illnesses. We are currently directing a majority of these funds towards programs that provide financial support to the following patient groups:

  • Pediatric cancer patients and their families
  • Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and their families

Community Support

The Foundation is committed to understanding the needs of the communities in which we operate and partnering with local organizations to alleviate poverty and support those living in our communities. Given the current economic climate, our community focus areas include:

  • Access to food and hunger relief
  • Housing for individuals and families
  • Job training for youth and adults

In the summer of 2015 we commissioned a report to better understand the ecosystem of needs and solutions in our Community Support focus areas. We are grateful for the thought partnership of several funders and grantees who supported this effort. We hope what we have learnt can be of value to the broader community.
