Genentech Appoints Two Vice Presidents

South San Francisco, Calif. -- May 11, 1988 --

Genentech, Inc. announced today the appointment of Frederick M. Hoar as vice president, corporate communications and Stephen Raines as vice president, patents.

Hoar will be responsible for external and internal communications. He joins Genentech from a similar position at Raychem Corporation, a $1 billion materials science and industrial products company.

Previously, Hoar was vice president of communications at Apple Computer Inc. after a decade at Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corporation. He received his A.B. from Harvard University and a master's degree in journalism from the University of Iowa.

Raines will be responsible for Genentech's intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and patent litigation. He came to Genentech from Warner-Lambert Company, where he was counsel, intellectual property.

Before serving as patent attorney at Squibb Corporation and earlier at American Cyanamid Company, Raines was a research chemist. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Michigan and earned his law degree from Temple University.
