South San Francisco, Calif. -- May 5, 1983 --Genentech, Inc. today announced the promotion of four employees to the position of vice president. They are Patricia McGrath, 33, William Young, 38, Michael Ross, 33, and Gary Steele, 34.
Ms. McGrath has been company controller, responsible for financial reporting, materials management, purchasing, and company-wide information services. She joined Genentech in 1979.
Mr. Young has been director of manufacturing, process development and engineering. With Genentech since 1980, he has been responsible for the design, construction and operation of the company's manufacturing and pilot facilities, which include the world's largest multi-product recombinant DNA plant.
Dr. Ross has been director of new product development, with responsibility for the regulatory and quality assurance, clinical, and pharmacology departments. He also is serving as project manager on human growth hormone, the first product which Genentech will bring to market under its own label. Ross came to the company in 1978.
Mr. Steele has been director of industrial business development since 1981, focusing on new applications for recombinant DNA technology outside of human and animal health care.
"Each of these people has made a major contribution to Genentech's development," according to Robert A. Swanson, president and chief executive officer. "We are proud to make them officers in the company and give particular recognition to their fine efforts."
