South San Francisco, Calif. -- November 10, 1983 --

For your background information, the RNA research reported by the Wall Street Journal today is basic research in molecular biology. As such it has the potential of being yet another technical tool which may be useful in the advancement of modern biotechnology.

Scientists have been engaged in the study of RNA replication for many years. The work reported by the Journal is a logical extension of the late Dr. Solomon Spiegelman's pioneering research in the replication of RNA in a test tube -- some of which was conducted at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University.

Of course, any commercial application of the development has yet to be demonstrated, and much further exploration is required. If and when it becomes a practical process, the biotechnology industry has the technology to take full advantage of it.
