Genentech Elects New Director to Its Board

South San Francisco, Calif. -- August 4, 1986 --

Genentech, Inc. today announced the election of C. Thomas Smith, Jr. to its board of directors.

Mr. Smith is president of Yale-New Haven Hospital, an 875-bed non-profit teaching hospital affiliated with Yale University Medical School.

"We are extremely pleased to have Mr. Smith on our board of directors," said Robert A. Swanson, chief executive officer. "His career in health care as a hospital administrator spans more 25 years. This experience will be a valuable addition to Genentech as we move our products to the marketplace through hospital-based physicians and hospital pharmacies."

Along with his board membership at Genentech, Mr. Smith is a member of Council on Health Care Technology of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and a director of the National Committee for Quality Health Care, Voluntary Hospital of America, Inc., Hospital Research and Development Institute, Inc., Science Park Development Corporation of New Haven and New Haven Savings Bank.
