Genentech Appoints David Beier Vice President - Government Affairs

South San Francisco, Calif. -- May 24, 1989 --

Genentech, Inc., today announced the appointment of David W. Beier as vice president - government affairs. Beier, 40, was for the past ten years counsel to the Committee on the Judiciary of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Responsible for intellectual property and international trade issues, Beier represented the Judiciary Committee at meetings of the World Intellectual Property Organization's Committee of Experts on Biotechnology and before the Universal Copyright Convention. He also represented the Judiciary Committee before the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

Before joining the Judiciary Committee staff, Beier was assistant counsel to the New York State Executive Advisory Committee on Sentencing. Prior to that he was deputy director of the Monroe County (New York) Legal Assistance Corporation and director of the Rochester, N.Y. office of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Beier has a J.D. from Albany Law School and a B.A. from Colgate University.
