Genentech Sponsors Programs for Pharmacists "Building A New Pharmacopeia" Premieres at ASHP

South San Francisco, Calif. -- November 30, 1989 --

"Recombinant DNA Technology: Building a New Pharmacopeia" is the title of a new video program which will be introduced at the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical Meeting in Atlanta next week. The video is the centerpiece of two 2-hour symposia sponsored by Genentech, Inc. and accredited for continuing education (CEU's) through the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia.

Especially designed to make hospital pharmacists more familiar with the recent developments in biotechnology, the video and its companion monograph focus on the technological applications in the field of medicine. Through this program, pharmacists will gain an understanding of and appreciation for how genetically-engineered pharmaceuticals are developed and manufactured. They will become acquainted with the "tools" of the technology which enable scientists to understand the fundamental substances and activities that trigger a variety of human disorders and/or underlie major disease processes in the effort to develop appropriate and safe treatments.

Following its debut at the ASHP, the video and monograph continuing education program will be made available to practicing pharmacists through Genentech's 278 person hospital-based sales force.

"Genentech recognizes that the hospital pharmacist plays a pivotal role in helping patients and health care professionals understand the special characteristics and handling needs of the products which result from this new technology," said Kenneth B. Paiva, Pharm. D., Genentech's manager of pharmacy affairs. "We value their contribution and are pleased to be able to provide them with information about this exciting technology and the medical advances that it continues to unfold."

In addition to the video and monograph, Genentech supports other educational programs for hospital pharmacists including a symposium on critical care also at the ASHP meeting next week, and two research/education grants in cardiovascular therapeutics and pharmacotherapy administered through the ASHP and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. A monograph on thrombolytic therapy and information about an ongoing pharmacist speakers bureau are available to pharmacists through local Genentech sales representatives, and the company is underwriting a number of continuing education programs for pharmacists administered by several state and local affiliates of ASHP.

Genentech, Inc. is a biotechnology company focusing on the development, manufacture and marketing of pharmaceutical products produced by recombinant DNA technology.
