Genentech Extends Benefits Coverage to Same-Sex Domestic Partners

South San Francisco, Calif. -- May 25, 1994 --

Genentech, Inc. today announced it will be extending eligibility for benefits coverage to same-sex domestic partners of employees beginning June 1. Benefits to be extended will include health, dental, vision, child care and bereavement leave, among other benefits.

"This very important change in our benefits program ensures that employees who are in committed relationships, yet are legally precluded from marrying, have the same access to benefits as employees who are married," said G. Kirk Raab, Genentech president and chief executive officer. "We're doing this because we believe it is the right thing to do."

Beginning this month, Genentech employees will have a chance to enroll their same-sex domestic partners in the benefits program. The program considers a domestic partner to be anyone who is an adult of the same sex, not related by blood, marriage or adoption, and lives with a Genentech employee in an exclusive committed relationship and shares financial obligations.

Genentech, Inc. is a leading international biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human pharmaceuticals for significant unmet medical needs. The company has headquarters in South San Francisco, California and is traded on the New York and Pacific Stock Exchanges under the symbol GNE.
