Genentech Names Louis J. Lavigne, Jr. Senior Vice President and Stephen Juelsgaard Vice President and General Counsel

South San Francisco, Calif. -- September 12, 1994 --

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE: GNE) today announced the promotions of Louis J. Lavigne, Jr. to senior vice president and chief financial officer and Stephen Juelsgaard to vice president and general counsel.

Lavigne joined Genentech in 1982. As senior vice president and chief financial officer, Lavigne is responsible for Genentech's treasury, control, information systems, insurance, investor relations, tax, planning and purchasing functions. His most recent position was vice president and chief financial officer, which he was named in 1988. He joined the company as assistant controller.

Prior to Lavigne's employment with Genentech, he was with Pennwalt Corporation. Lavigne holds a bachelor's of science degree in business administration from Babson College and a master's in business administration from Temple University.

Juelsgaard joined Genentech in 1985. As vice president and general counsel, he is responsible for corporate law, patents and litigation. His most recent position was vice president, corporate law, to which he was named in 1993. He joined the company as corporate counsel.

Prior to Juelsgaard's employment with Genentech, he was with the Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati law firm. Juelsgaard holds a master's of science degree from Iowa State University and a law degree from Stanford Law School.
