Brewer Resigns as Genentech's Senior VP of Sales & Marketing

After eleven successful years helping to build GNE, Brewer looks to broad involvement in different enterprise in healthcare/biotech

South San Francisco, Calif. -- November 17, 1995 --

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE: GNE) today announced Richard B. Brewer, 44, resigned his position as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Brewer had joined Genentech in 1984 as a product manager to launch Genentech's first commercial product, and held positions of increasing responsibility from that time. He holds his Masters in Business Administration from the Kellogg graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

"Genentech is a great company with a bright future," said Brewer, "and I look back at my time here as both rewarding and challenging. But now I'd like a change, and I'm excited about seeking out new opportunity that provides a broader involvement in healthcare and biotechnology."

Genentech plans to conduct a nationwide search for a replacement for Mr. Brewer. Today, CEO Arthur Levinson appointed Kimberly Popovits as acting Vice President for Sales and Marketing. Ms. Popovits had been serving as Vice President of Sales. Jerry Beers will continue in his role as Vice President of Marketing.

"We wish Dick the best of luck in his new endeavors and appreciate the role he has played in building Genentech into the commercial success that it is today," said Arthur D. Levinson, president and CEO of Genentech, Inc. "After his eleven years of accomplishments here, I can understand Dick's interest to pursue new and broader interests in healthcare," Levinson added. "We are also very fortunate to have a strong Sales and Marketing Division that can carry on fully during our search for a replacement."

Genentech, Inc. is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets human pharmaceuticals for significant medical needs. The company has headquarters in South San Francisco, California and is traded on the New York and Pacific Stock Exchanges under the symbol GNE.
