Genentech Names Johnston Vice President, Intellectual Property

South San Francisco, Calif. -- June 25, 1998 --

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE: GNE) today announced the promotion of Sean A. Johnston to vice president, Intellectual Property.

Johnston, 39, joined Genentech in October, 1990 as Patent Counsel in Legal. He is currently Associate General Counsel/Manager of Patent Litigation.

Prior to joining Genentech, Johnston served as Law Clerk to Judge Wm. Matthew Byrne, Jr. in the U.S. District Court, Central District of California in Los Angeles, and before that as Research Scientist at International Genetic Engineering, Inc./Xoma Corp. Johnston received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles. He also holds a J.D. with Honors from Stanford Law School.
