South San Francisco, Calif. -- September 19, 2002 --Genentech, Inc. (NYSE: DNA) announced today that it has been named by Science magazine as the top employer and most admired company in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The honor is the result of a survey of selected readers and subscribers to Science conducted by Hughes Research Worldwide of Rockville, MD. Respondents specialize in a wide variety of disciplines within the life science industry; about three-quarters have a Ph.D., M.D., or both.
"We are honored that the scientific community has recognized Genentech as a great place to work," said Richard Scheller, Ph.D., senior vice president, Research at Genentech. "We're gratified by this because we've worked hard to create an environment for our scientists that supports important research, fosters individual creativity and initiative, and provides the opportunity to translate discoveries into medicines that will help save, extend or enhance people's lives."
The survey sought to determine which biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies were most admired by people who work in the field, and why. Respondents were asked to rank companies on a list of specific attributes. According to Science, in terms of respondents rankings, the clear number one is Genentech. The company is rated at or near the top for the four attributes respondents deemed most important overall: being an innovative leader in the industry, having loyal employees, having work culture and personal values aligned, and carrying out important quality research.
Genentech was founded 26 years ago with a focus on excellent science and a philosophy of attracting the right people and giving them the conditions to succeed. The company's scientists publish an average of 250 to 300 papers a year and are among the top one percent of researchers in the world in terms of total citations. To continue to remain at the forefront of scientific research, a major expansion of Genentech's Founders' Research Center is underway. When the project is finished, the Center will be the world's largest single-site facility for biotechnology research.
Genentech is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes biotherapeutics for significant unmet medical needs. Fifteen of the currently approved biotechnology products originated from or are based on Genentech science. Genentech manufactures and commercializes ten biotechnology products directly in the United States. The company has headquarters in South San Francisco, California, and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DNA.
