Genentech Recognized as One of The 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers

Company Selected for 11th Year for Retaining Family-Friendly Culture

South San Francisco, Calif. -- September 24, 2002 --

Genentech, Inc. (NYSE: DNA) today announced that it has been named one of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" in the October issue of Working Mother magazine. Genentech is the only biotechnology company to be named to Working Mother’s 2002 list. It is also one of only eight California-based companies that made this year’s list.

"Our employees are critical to Genentech’s success and we feel it is important to reward them with an excellent work environment and benefits," said Arthur D. Levinson, Ph.D., chairman and chief executive officer. "We are pleased to be recognized by Working Mother magazine for our attention to the needs of parent employees, and will continue our efforts to make Genentech a great place to work for our employees."

Working Mother magazine uses a year-long process to choose the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers." Editors and independent analysts review hundreds of companies for six criteria including percentage of women in the workforce, leave for new parents, flexible work arrangements, child care, work-life balance benefits and opportunities for women to advance.

Genentech’s innovative benefits include many services to help employees maintain work-life balance such as a company-sponsored fitness facility, an on-site dental van, take-home meals, and a concierge service. In addition, the company was recognized by Working Mother for its outstanding, family-friendly benefits such as flexible work arrangements and 2nd Generation, one of the largest corporate-sponsored, near-site child care facilities in the country, now in its thirteenth year. Genentech subsidizes some costs of the center, which, in addition to its normal hours, also offers a special"date night" for parents once per quarter along with expanded hours during school holidays.

Genentech is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes biotherapeutics for significant unmet medical needs. Fifteen of the currently approved biotechnology products originated from or are based on Genentech science. Genentech manufactures and commercializes ten biotechnology products directly in the United States. The company has headquarters in South San Francisco, California, and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DNA.
