In healthy people, proteins called clotting factors work together to stop bleeding throughout the body in a process called the coagulation cascade. Like a chain reaction, these clotting factors activate each other in a specific order.
But in people with a bleeding disorder called hemophilia A, one of these factors is either missing or lacking: Factor 8.
Factor 8 plays a special role in the coagulation cascade, as an essential “co-factor”. Without Factor 8, Factor 9 cannot activate Factor 10 and complete the cascade.
