Genentech Opens Clinical Supply Center for Next-generation Biologics Manufacturing

Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, today announced the opening of its innovative new Clinical Supply Center in South San Francisco.

The Clinical Supply Center is Genentech’s flagship small-batch biologics facility at the forefront of next-generation manufacturing and environmentally sustainable production. It leverages the most advanced bioprocessing technologies combined with an agile, modular design to accelerate the on-demand delivery of our investigational medicine pipeline to patients in clinical trials. It also represents a new model for the fast, efficient production of potential therapeutics for smaller patient populations, including personalized and rare disease medicines.

The first Genentech manufacturing facility to achieve LEED Gold certification, the Clinical Supply Center maximizes efficiency with fewer resources to significantly reduce environmental impact compared to traditional facilities. Innovative bioprocess bags utilized in the center eliminate the need to clean and sterilize bioreactors after each manufacturing run, which significantly decreases the amount of water, steam and chemicals used.

“The Clinical Supply Center will speed the delivery of our clinical trial pipeline to patients and establishes a new biomanufacturing model for future personalized and rare disease medicines,” said Alexander Hardy, chief executive officer, Genentech. “We are delighted to have created a state-of-the-art facility that can deliver the most technologically advanced and agile biologics production with a significantly reduced environmental impact.”

This $250 million investment builds upon Genentech’s legacy of pioneering innovation in manufacturing and the company’s long-standing commitment to California. It is the first example of what will become a core and integral component of Genentech and Roche’s future global manufacturing network.

“The creation of innovative medicine manufacturing infrastructure like Genentech’s new Clinical Supply Center is critical to our ability to meet patient needs and respond swiftly to public health emergencies,” said California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis. “As we work with urgency to tackle the climate crisis, I am glad to see Genentech’s commitment to sustainable technologies and environmentally responsible operations integrated into the design of this exciting new facility.”
