Supporting Diverse Suppliers with a $1 Billion Annual Commitment

Working with diverse suppliers brings diverse perspectives and enables us to achieve the best results.

We are committed to spending $1 billion annually with diverse suppliers (U.S-based companies more than 51% African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, woman, veteran or LGBTQ + owned) by 2025. By expanding our investment in diverse suppliers, we are working to ensure that our financial resources are being used to generate economic opportunity for historically marginalized communities.

The collective sum of our differences is what makes us a better company, and a smarter and more effective team to support our clients.

- Sarah Fitzharding, Ph.D., Co-founder Galileo Research & Strategy Consultancy

In 2021, we reached $879M in diverse supplier spend, a nearly 20% increase from 2020. Our commitment to support diverse suppliers goes beyond just spending: We also work closely with our suppliers through educational outreach, mentorship opportunities and hands-on support to help their businesses grow and evolve.

  • 89.4%: Suppliers with RFPs of $500,000+ who have D&I Commitments
  • $879M: Increased diverse supplier investment by 19.6% YoY
  • The diversity of our suppliers is important to Genentech’s continued success, too. Working with a broader and more diverse range of suppliers brings the broadest range of perspectives to the work that we do. For an innovation-focused enterprise, these fresh ideas are a vital fuel that drives ingenuity and creativity.

Finding Patient Moments that Matter with Galileo

Galileo Research & Strategy Consultancy, a female-founded research firm and consultancy, is one of many diverse suppliers we work with at Genentech. Co-founded by Cathy Lennox and Dr. Sarah Fitzharding, Galileo uses an empathetic, patient-first approach to help teams across Genentech gain rich insights directly from patient populations. For Genentech’s Strategic Analytics and Intelligence team, insights from Galileo deepen their understanding of the patient experience to inform how to launch our brands and effectively move our patients across the care continuum. “They get to the moments that matter,” says Palu Dedhia, the principal manager and lead of Genentech’s Primary Insights Capability.

Indeed, these “moments” have a direct impact on the information that’s taken into account when designing simple, meaningful and consistent experiences for patients. Instead of taking statements at face value, Galileo excels in uncovering insightful nuances from what patients share. By diversifying our supply chain, we’re able to incorporate nuanced perspectives and different approaches to better innovate and serve our patients.

Galileo strives to create a culture of support, sensitivity, inclusion and respect — a key driver of its success. “We believe that magic sparks at the intersections of different perspectives, experiences and identities,” Lennox says. Adds Fitzharding: “The collective sum of our differences is what makes us a better company, and a smarter and more effective team to support our clients.”
