Transforming Society

Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion is challenging, complex and requires broad societal transformation. The kind of progress we want to see requires commitment and collaboration not just within but - importantly - beyond our walls. That’s why we’re investing and cultivating partnerships across healthcare, education, and within all communities. Below are just some examples of how we are helping to transform society through our investments and partnerships:

Futurelab K-12 STEM Education

We are addressing STEM education barriers through Futurelab, our flagship initiative that supports all K-12 students in the South San Francisco Unified School District (SSFUSD) by getting them excited to learn about science, improving their college readiness and inspiring them to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Since its launch in 2015, Genentech has invested more than $30M and almost 60,000 employee volunteer hours in Futurelab — and, it’s having a measurable impact: nearly 75% of students have reported an increased interest in science and engineering.

University & College Grants

Through the Genentech Foundation, we are providing a $10.5 million grant over five years to San Francisco State University (SFSU) to support 100 underrepresented and low-income students per year along their academic journey — expanding on a decade of support to SFSU through scholarships to the College of Science & Engineering.

The Genentech Foundation is also helping to dismantle barriers for underrepresented students interested in science and medicine through grants to the University of California, Davis and the American Chemical Society.

Tackling Childhood Adversity

Children from low-income communities are disproportionately affected by Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, which have been linked to at least five of the top 10 leading causes of death by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In 2017, we launched The Resilience Effect - a philanthropic program to help address childhood adversity and its negative effects on health and well-being.

We are taking a health equity lens to ensuring that all Bay Area children facing adversity can have a healthy and vibrant future. This includes the Resilient Beginnings Collaborative, our partnership with Center for Care Innovations to help more than 50,000 Bay Area children from low-income backgrounds by empowering the pediatric healthcare system.

Equitable Cancer Care

To tackle racial and ethnic disparities in cancer care, we provided a transformational grant to Stand Up to Cancer (SU2C) to launch the first multidisciplinary Health Equity Breakthrough Research Team, including $6 million for cancer research in underrepresented populations. This investment sets a new industry standard for integrating diversity, equity and inclusion in innovative approaches to cancer research and treatment.
